Documenting Digital Growth - A Journey Through SEO, Social Media & Storytelling."
Writing a blog involves a lot of factors including but not limited to planning, setting up a narrative and contextual visuals alongside to captivate the audience. This is the longer answer, the shorter and honestly the better one is “Just start writing”.
Although before we start, let’s clear the very basics of blogging and what separates it from an article ?
Any piece of written material that is created in the informal manner for a more personalised and conversational tone is called a blog.
These are all blogs as they are written in first person format where I’ve shared my learning and is for my audience which honestly doesn’t exist as of now but we’ll get there. Even though a lot of my content focuses on what and how, I still can’t call these as articles as they are a little bit different in this regard.
These are all blogs as they are written in first person format where I’ve shared my learning and is for my audience which honestly doesn’t exist as of now but we’ll get there. Even though a lot of my content focuses on what and how, I still can’t call these as articles as they are a little bit different in this regard.
Articles are formal, researched and backed by multiple reports to educate the readers, the one you typically see from a media outlet as they have the authority and budget to double check the claims and reports made in the article itself. Google doesn’t favour one over another and until and unless you are writing about things like medical, law and such fields where you have to triple check your claims and reports, just write for your users and how they can benefit from it.
3 of my blogs are How To blogs and the sole aim of them is to be an instruction guide for people who are just beginners in SEO and marketing. Their market is big but so is the number of writers targeting the said market. Make use of these to show authority over any topic but make sure to back up your data with good data and contextual relevant images.
Remember those Most Rude celebrity lists you would see on Facebook a decade back with a preview of a person who you knew should be on that list, those are still working, not the rude celebrity list but the format. Numbers are enticing and ranking is what is asked of us starting from school so a combination of those 2 should definitely be on your checklist as you look around for content.
If I was writing this blog a decade back, my answer would be vastly different from what I’m gonna answer this question. At that time, Google didn’t have the almighty AI overview thrown around for the majority of the queries and honestly, I don’t have any opinion on it, just some observations.
If I’m trying to quickly find out what is a particular thing before the exams, I don’t want to go through multiple paragraph to get the answer, AI Overviews helps me there and If I’m trying to learn a process which requires much more than what Google can push in its overview, I’ll scroll down to find a site which can help me with the same so If you are writing a What Is Blogs, aim for guides instead of playing around with something that can be answered in summary. For Example, SEO is a topic and I can write a blog about what is SEO, I can’t write 1000 words of what is it, it gets answered in the first paragraph itself.
The above is a snippet of my what is seo blog and you can see that the question is answered in the first paragraph itself without beating around the bush, all the other subsidiary content just add onto the content and not withhold the main query of the users. So it is not a what is blog, so aim for guides and not just what is what.
Case studies are when you cover a detailed study about a specific subject along with multiple data sources and dive deep into a topic rather than just skimming over the subject.
They are also one such source which you can use to do link building and build authority over a particular topic which will help you achieve better ranking for your content.
The reason for your blog’s existence will help determine its position in the World wide web. Are you trying to make information pieces for your already existing pottery enthusiasts subscribers or are you trying to rank for a high volume less KD keyword, it’ll decide the value and the content placed in its category. If you have figured it out, let’s get into the technical part and how we can help your blog stand out. Honestly, this might just be the easier part so I have to keep it brief.
Answered in subsidiary query & so on
Answered in H1
1,200+ words allow for more comprehensive, detailed, and authoritative, or "pillar" content.
Shorter, 600-word posts are better for concise, quick-hitting topics or mobile users.
If content demands immediate answer, Reach the solution as fast as you can and then provide the extra juice. If you hover over the solution for far too long, your content will be buried by both readers and search engines.
When the blog is a guide and needs step by step process
You might like writing about what you do but If you want your content to stand out, it should practically be better than the one already at the top. Write how you understand the topic and how you would explain the same, sometimes we overestimate what we know and at such times, look for what’s already pulling in people, make your draft better and then click on the publish button.
Words tell stories but a picture speaks a thousand words on its own. Use them in your content in relevant places and give the necessary alt text. Make the images such that they can stand on their own even if looked without the whole context but add a watermark to it so whenever it is referenced, your content shows up with your name.
There is a reason why same foundation learnings are given to every child in the starting of their learning journey so when they finally implement their own unique spin over the already made foundation, we get something new and the same is the case for blogs where you can show a unique value proposition only you have seen or thought of, you can be a gatekeeper for the same but it’s better to lay it out first before you see someone else get fame with what’s sitting in your draft.
If you have seen a content that can be made better, mark the same and incorporate it into your learning and repeat the process for every topic, the final draft combining all of them is your blog. After publishing, read your own blog too after a couple of weeks and see if you could have made something better and keep repeating it. And congratulations, after some time you finally know How To Write A Blog.
